Once your diagnosis of Sleep Apnea has been confirmed by an overnight sleep study you will need to discuss treatment options with your physician. The most common treatment for OSA is Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy. In order to obtain a PAP device a physician’s prescription is required. PAP therapy is considered a medical treatment and is regulated by the FDA.
For moderate to severe cases of OSA, treatment with PAP therapy may have been initiated during your first overnight sleep study. A recommendation for an optimum pressure may have been provided to your physician in the sleep study report by the interpreting sleep specialist.
For some cases of OSA, your physician may have you return to the sleep lab for another type of overnight sleep study known as a PAP titration study.
The focus of the PAP titration is to treat your sleep disordered breathing with the optimum PAP pressure. Your technician will adjust the pressure throughout the night as you peacefully sleep to eliminate your apnea events. Following the study, a detailed report will be sent to your physician which will include recommendations for the optimum PAP pressure for your unique case. |
