Positive Airway Pressure FAQs

When should I start feeling better after beginning to use PAP therapy?

Adjustment to PAP therapy varies from patient to patient. Most of our patients have commented that they have started feeling better after a couple of weeks.
Some people report immediate relief, others report it took several months for them to notice a difference.

The first month of therapy is the most crucial and you should attempt to use your treatment every night for as long as possible. As you consistently use your PAP device try to notice small improvements along the way. Do you remember dreaming? Are you still excessively sleepy? Do you still wake up with a headache?  It is often the case that others will notice the difference before you do.

How long will I have to use PAP therapy?

As long as you continue to have sleep disordered breathing, you will need to be adequately treated for it. For some cases, lifestyle changes such as weight loss can affect the severity of your diagnosis resulting in a prescribed follow up sleep study to determine the necessity of treatment.

How do I travel with my PAP therapy device?

Traveling with your PAP device can be easy with some proper preparation.

If you are planning on flying with your PAP device, take it as a carry on item. Never check your PAP device as normal luggage handling procedures can damage it.  Today’s PAP equipment is small and lightweight and easy to travel with. It may be beneficial for you to call ahead and ask your airline what their policy is for carry on medical equipment.

If you are planning to drive across the country or go camping take your PAP device along. Most PAP devices depending on the make and model have the ability to run off of a 12V power supply. Most PAP devices are able to run off a battery or can be plugged into a cigarette lighter in your car or RV if you have the proper cables or adapters.

High altitudes can affect your pressure. You should consult your healthcare professional or PAP supplier if your travel plans call for sleep at altitudes much higher or lower than those at home.

Feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have regarding travel with a PAP device.
